Ultimate Family Vacation Packing List

By Priya Anand · May 2, 2026 · Updated August 28, 2026 · 11 min read

A full family packing list is really five smaller lists — documents, health, clothing, entertainment, and tech — and most of the stress around packing comes from trying to hold all five in your head at once instead of working through them one at a time.

This is the complete version, meant to be worked through a week or so before a longer trip. If you’re looking for the fast, night-before version instead, we’ve got a shorter companion guide for that.

Documents and money

  • Passports for every traveler, checked for at least 6 months' validity if going abroad
  • A photo of every passport's ID page, saved to your phone and emailed to yourself
  • Travel insurance policy number and emergency contact, printed and in your phone
  • A backup payment card, packed separately from your main wallet
  • Any required visas or entry forms, printed rather than relying on a data connection at the border

Health and first aid

  • Any prescription medication in original packaging, packed in a carry-on, not checked luggage
  • A basic kit: children's pain reliever, motion sickness tablets, bandages, and antihistamine
  • Sunscreen — pack more than feels necessary, especially for a beach trip
  • A copy of vaccination records if traveling somewhere that may ask, or if your child has an unusual medical history
  • Hand sanitizer and a small pack of wipes, kept accessible rather than buried in a suitcase

Clothing, sized realistically

The instinct is to pack one outfit per day, but most family trips do better with roughly two-thirds that many outfits plus access to laundry, either at the accommodation or a nearby laundromat. Fewer bags to manage matters more than having a fresh outfit for every single day.

  • One 'nice enough' outfit per person for any dinner or event that calls for it
  • A layer for air conditioning — flights and many restaurants run cold regardless of climate
  • One item of rain gear per person if there's any chance of rain, packed even if the forecast looks clear
  • Water shoes if the destination has any rocky or coral beach entry

Entertainment and the boredom kit

  • One 'new to them' small toy or activity per kid, ideally wrapped or otherwise not visible until needed
  • A tablet loaded with downloaded (not streamed) shows and games before you leave home
  • Headphones sized for kids, plus a splitter if siblings will share a screen
  • A couple of familiar comfort items — a specific stuffed animal or blanket — rather than assuming a hotel pillow will do

Tech and chargers

  • One charger per device, not one shared charger per family — this is the single most common tech-related argument on a trip
  • A portable battery pack, charged before departure
  • A universal adapter if traveling internationally, tested at home before you go
  • Offline maps downloaded for your destination, in case of unreliable data

The night before departure

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we start packing for a family trip?

Start gathering items 1–2 weeks out for anything not in daily use — documents, first aid kit, adapters — then do the final full pack the night before departure.

What's the most commonly forgotten item on family trips?

Chargers, specifically having only one per family instead of one per device, and swimsuits left drying somewhere after a previous trip.

Should each family member pack their own bag?

For kids old enough to help (roughly age 5+), yes — even partial involvement in packing their own bag tends to reduce mid-trip 'I don't know where it is' moments.
